Divorce Rings: The Ultimate Jewelry Statement of a New Beginning

With today's ever growing divorce rate, it seems like it was only a matter of time before the idea of a divorce ring finally came together. Thousands of people around the globe are beginning to embrace the idea of a divorce ring and what it stands for. Having a divorce ring on display sends a certain message to the world, and most importantly it actually helps people gain closure of an undoubtedly upsetting period in their lives.
Divorce rings are usually comprised of a thick gold band complete with a break in the center, bluntly symbolizing the fact that the marriage has been broken. In addition, in most cases these rings will have three bands of white gold on either side of the split. These three bands respectively represent the three main events leading up to the divorce: the time the couple met, the year they got married, and finally the event of their divorce.

There is also an alternative option people are opting for when it comes to divorce rings. These are the so-called transition rings, designed to represent different transitions in a person's life. Every transition ring design symbolizes a certain chapter in one's life and is primarily designed to prompt the support of friends and family. The most popular transition ring choice when it comes to divorce rings is a ring depicting the sun and its rays – a representation of a new dawn, which in turn symbolizes the transition into a new chapter in one's life.

Having a divorce ring is not about dwelling on the past, but quite the opposite. Wearing a divorce ring on one's finger reinforces the fact that a new journey in life has begun. Just as a college graduate would wear his ring to show where he came from, divorce rings are meant to allow people to have a brisk look into one's past events. Divorce rings are about sending the right message to the outside world. It represents the fact that the person is divorced and ready to begin his/her new life as a single man/woman. Unlike the cold and closed impact a wedding ring tends to have on strangers, a divorce ring achieves quite the opposite effect. It tells the world that you are ready to meet new people and gives a sense of freedom and emancipation to the wearer.

Because this new age trend has only recently begun to take shape, there are no clear cut rules regarding the way in which divorce rings should be worn. Some argue that a divorce ring should be worn on the third finger on the right hand, in direct contrast to the way a wedding ring would be worn. Others actually believe that divorce ring should be worn on their middle fingers, as a humorous suggestion of their feelings towards their ex-spouses. This just goes to show that divorce rings can be worn on any finger and it is entirely up to the individual wearing it.

As odd as it sounds, divorce rings are designed to celebrate the end of a relationship gone bad. Although some might view these rings as a dismal attempt by jewelers to make a profit off of people's emotions, the truth of the matter is that confronting difficult issues such as divorce and putting them out on display may actually help people cope and heal. Because divorce rings symbolize hope, freedom and the beginning of a new chapter, they have the power to effectively inspire people to finally gain closure.
