The Mysterious World of Runes

Right about now, everyone seems to be going wild about rune inspired jewelry, and it seems like few people do it better than jewelry designer Natalie Padveen, who not only owns Mystic Fe Designs, but is also the lead designer of the avant garde jewelry company.

She was inspired for this new line of rune jewelry when she went on a visit to mystic Iceland and, there, took to the stories describing the Nordic runes and their ancient powers.

The fact that rune is actually derived from “runa,” a word that used to mean a mystery or a secret, shows itself quite well in her new collection.

Specifically, the collection revolves around five main runes — Good Luck, Good Health, Peace, Protection, and Love. They are depicted in myriad ways, some involving silver, others using diamonds and 14k gold. Whatever the case, however, they are not only beautiful but will surely invite good fortune and prosperity.

Year of the Snake 2: The Ring

As promised, here is the second, snake themed piece by the innovative and elegant designer, Roberto Coin. I find this ring extremely interesting. This piece comes from Roberto Coin’s Animalier collection, from the Cobra category.

Yet again, this is unquestionably serpentine, yet it is not so over the top that it becomes a stereotypical, cliched mockery of itself. This designer makes you work for it. He will not point out the obvious, he will not do what you expect, because to do that would run the risk of creating something kitschy and potentially disastrous.

As you can see, this rose gold ring represents the scales of the cobra. Speaking of the metal, the rose gold is absolutely gorgeous. It is inherently soft and feminine, yet somehow evocative and sensual as well — two things which are definitely snake like. The scales are made of complimentary pink enamel and diamonds. The pink shade lends a sense of whimsy to the entire piece. After all, when as the last time you saw a pink cobra?

Chocolate Diamonds from Jewellery Trade

Chocolate is sinful, decadent and delicious! And now it is available in jewellery. Not to eat, mind you, but sumptuous gems. All carats and cuts of diamonds, created with the rich color of chocolate, are as luxurious as the word chocolate implies.

While chocolate gemstones are available at many online jewellery sites, the leading authority and purveyor of chocolate diamonds is Jewellery Trade, a family with five hundred years of jewellery experience, and one who presently focuses on collecting rare, naturally colored diamonds. All of their stones are taken from one mine in Australia called Argyle. Not surprising, considering the company’s history and expertise, it appears as though Jewellery Trade owns the trademarks to Chocolate Diamonds and Chocolate Pearls.

August Babies Will Go Crazy for Gabriel Ofiesh Handcrafted Jewelry

As an August baby myself, I have to confess that I do not often find peridot jewelry that I really like. However, Gabriel Ofiesh Handcrafted Jewelry has changed that in one fell swoop, with these earrings.

They are the Gold Peridot Stud Earrings, but they are definitely the most luxurious and stylish studs that I have ever seen, incorporating both the dazzling green gemstone and diamonds in a gorgeous gold setting.

Gabriel Ofiesh has been creating innovations in form, movement, and color for no less than thirty years. The pieces are simple but elegant, classic but extremely, impressively versatile.

Within his jewelry — as you can see in these earrings — you will find a lot of sinuous curves, a lot of simple but stylish forms, and a lot of graceful surfaces: the makings of truly timeless pieces of jewelry.

Hot Jewelry Trends

In this blog, we have gone over a bunch of different jewelry pieces and we have gone over a bunch of different trends in jewelry but have we touched on 2010 trends?  Not yet!  That is what we are going to do in the next couple blogs, so that way you can make sure that you are aware of all of the trends in jewelry coming down the pipeline. This year is going to be the biggest year for colored diamonds.  In the past, diamonds were things that were colorless, but now – colored diamonds are making a huge statement and I can tell you for sure that I love this particular trend!  Not only are they beautiful but they can truly go with any outfit.
However – one thing to be aware of whenever you are looking to purchase some colored diamonds is the fact that these diamonds are extremely expensive – so make sure you are ready to flip the bill!

An Infinitely Beautiful Infinity Bracelet 27Dec

I have a thing about the infinity sign. It is so seemingly simple — just a variation of the number eight, turned on its side — and yet it is so incredibly meaningful. Erica Anenberg, creator of this gorgeous Silver Infinity Bracelet, definitely seems to realize the meanings of — and behind — the sign.
The pendant that comprises the chief idea of the bracelet is a bright, bold, and lustrous silver. It contrasts beautifully with the likewise red strands which loop around to create the bracelet. They are made out of a luxurious suede.
The bracelet is seven inches in length and closes with the help of a durable lobster claw clasp, plated in silver as well.
At some retailers, you can find this bracelet for less than one hundred dollars. What a deal!

Bring a Little Charm to Your Ears this Season 16Nov

Stephen Dweck is a highly renowned jewelry, a talent who went to New York City’s School of Visual Arts. There, he began with carving stone bangles — by hand. That speaks volumes of his talent then, and what it has evolved into now. This is good news for you, because he now has some pieces which speak to a growing trend: charms. But we are not talking about the standard charm bracelet here, oh no.
These are Stephen Dweck’s Heart Dangle Earrings with Charms. They come from the famed Garden of Stephen collection. They feature a crescent moon of lapis, flowers made of malachite, and spades made of turquoise. These charms dangle from a red heart of carnelian.

Dmitriy Pavlov Jewelry Is out of this World 01Nov

Russian born artist and designer Dmitriy Pavlov has had exhibitions all over the world, earning him worldwide renown. He is considered world class when it comes to his talent as a goldsmith and as an artist. His jewelry pieces are handcrafted, focusing on metal art done in exquisite miniature. This gemstone Panagea Pendant is a great example of his gorgeous, intricate work. It contains green peridots, white diamonds, and green chrysophrase, all put together to create an exquisite final product.
Though normally not a fan of yellow gold, even I have to admit that the green peridot makes a stunning complement to the gold.  The necklace is bright and bold without ever veering into the realm of gaudy.  It is at once antique looking but edgy.

Badgley Mischka Makes You Pretty in Pearls 12Oct

For years without name, Badgley Mischka — the design label of James Mischka and Mark Badgley — has been a linchpin of fashion. The two men are considered two of the top clothing designers in the United States, producing pieces that are glamorous but wearable, fashionable but functional, and beyond stylish. And now Badgley Mischka has jewelry that is just as timeless and sophisticated. In a way, a pearl necklace from Badgley Mischka is perfect — pearls are timeless too, after all.
You might think pearls are a little too antiquated, but just take a look at this gorgeous Victorian Pearl Choker. Antique? Absolutely, but with an undeniable and stylish edge. It goes great with a little blank dress.
It features six strands of pearls, as well as an intricate, coolly chunky pendant made of rhinestones. The choker is made of freshwater pearls and glass crystals and, get this, it is less than three hundred dollars!

Armani Exhange Does It up Stylish

Oh, Armani. What can you not do? I love Armani — and Armani Exchange, of course. In spite of what the designer praising, haute couture worshiping, label loving purists of fashion say, at least Armani Exchange deigns to bring the brand to the masses, you know what I am saying? But anyway, let me climb down off my soapbox and leave the pedestal free for something that actually belongs there: this stunning Rhinestone Cluster Necklace by Armani Exchange.
Rhinestones most definitely make a statement, and these rhinestones make a particular one. This ornate necklaces features faceted beans and stones in a variety of sizes, shapes, and colors, along with fringe accents dangling from the clusters. The fringe is comprised of little chains as well as small black rhinestones.

Chanel Cuff: You’ve Got To See This!

When it comes to cuff bracelets, I have always been a huge fan of them. Not only are cuff bracelets all of the fuss this season but Chanel is all of the fuss this season. So what do you get when you combine two of the main events in 2009? Well, you get this beautiful Chanel cuff that honestly, would look good on anyone and everyone!

Not only is the attention to detail on this beautiful piece impeccable, but I have to say that I love the Chanel logo. Personally, I am not a use fan of the Chanel logo, but when I see it encrusted with diamonds on one of my favorite types of bracelets? It definitely changed my opinion!

Now you know, if Chanel is coming out with jewelry, it isn’t going to be cheap, so if you have to be prepared to pay quite the price for this beauty, but isn’t it worth it? Especially with Valentine’s Day coming up!

Turquoise Jewelry: Definitely Amazing!

Turquoise jewelry is honestly some of the prettiest jewelry in the freakin’ world. Not only can you wear it with anything and everything, but honestly, if you are going to put on a pair of earrings, why not make them drop turquoise to really stand out and look freaking fantastic!

Turquoise jewelry is one of those pieces and stones that can really go with anything and everything. For example, you can wear a pair of earrings like this with a pair of jeans, a sweater, a business suit or even your little black dress!

So as you can see, these earrings are honestly one of the greatest and more versatile pieces of jewelry in the world! All you need is a little imagination!

Drop Necklaces: Definitely In This Season!

One thing that I have to say about the jewelry market is going to be that while it is constantly changing, constantly updating and constantly trying to come up with new things, there are still some things that are just timeless and classic and one of them happens to be the drop necklace. This amazing necklace is honestly one of the sexiest pieces of jewelry in the world.

Not only does a drop necklace look amazing on any neck, but really think about it, a woman shows up to a date in her amazing little black dress and on her neck, plunging downward is a drop necklace. Think about amazing that would look, not only would she feel beautiful, but the necklace will become the focal point of her entire outfit and it will look amazing.

So the next time you are in the market for an anniversary gift, birthday gift or Christmas gift, get her something that she will not only love, but look incredible in as well.

Tori Spelling’s Take on Jewelry

If you are any kind of reality TV junkie, then you are probably well aware that Tori Spelling has gone from 90210’s favorite virgin to the queen of TV movies to, finally, mother, wife, reality star, and … jewelry designer? As it so happens, yes, she is designing jewelry these days, along with Mehran, one of her very closest friends (or so I gathered from her first book, thank you very much).

The question is, is her jewelry any good? Would you want to wear it? Well, it has to be said that Ms. Spelling’s (also known as Mrs. McDermott’s) jewelry line, available primarily through the Home Shopping Network, is pretty cool.

I really like this particular piece, the Simulated Pearl and Black Enamel Necklace. It features dangling accents of branches and petals with a gold toned chain and black satin ribbon.

Want something trendy that you can actually afford? Well, Tori may actually be able to help you.

Holiday 2005: This One’s for the Boys!

You know, the modern man has jewelry needs as well. Recognizing that, the Simmons Jewelry Company has been offering chains, bracelets, rings, pendants, and even earrings for men since 2005.

Classic pieces get an innovative and very urban twist, making it easy to understand why you can see pieces from the line on so many male celebrities and entertainers.

One classic piece which has gotten a very cool, very edgy makeover is the dog tag necklace. As you can see here on the Stainless Steel & Leather Dog Tag Pendant with Diamond Accent, even dog tags are getting seriously blinged out.

The pendant has a very polished finish complete with a round diamond accent on silver side. The back side features black leather.

This can be had for less than three hundred dollars in certain locations.

Heidi Daus Asks that You Forget Her Not

Heidi Daus makes beautiful jewelry. That is just a fact, and there are no ifs, ands, or buts about it, not a single one.

She is well known for being spirited and innovative in her designs, which will definitely attract if not command attention. You can find romance in her collections, as well as Baroque decadence and even art deco quirkiness. The spectrum is absolutely amazing.

One great example of her work is this Forget Me Knot Crystal Accented Bangle Bracelet. The intricate design is stunningly gorgeous. It features many rows of dazzling, pave set black diamond color crystals; the knot itself features the same pave set crystals.

It is both antique looking yet timeless, with a wonderful, evocative romantic edge.

Bonhams to Sell Elton John’s “J” Shaped Brooch

London auctioneers, Bonhams, founded in 1793 and the oldest and largest auction house of fine arts and antiques, is selling a J-shaped brooch once owned by Elton John. They expect it to sell for in the neighborhood of £12,000. Elton wore the diamond and sapphire brooch in his “I Don’t Wanna Go on With You Like That” video. He then sold the brooch in 1993. Made up of five oval sapphires, a cluster of round sapphires and diamonds, the brooch was actually created in 1935.

Maternity Navel Piercings

It seems to be very fashionable and indeed popular for younger women to pierce their navel. But when they become pregnant and the tummy starts to expand, the piercing can tear the skin since the adornment is not long enough. So companies have started to offer maternity piercings that are made longer and allow room for expansion.

Standard belly rings and barbells not only cause the skin to rip but also, in many instances, cause stretch marks, scars and ultimately the trouble of being repierced after the baby is born. Made from medical grade material in a longer version, usually two inches, the Pregnancy Piercings™ can be worn throughout the whole pregnancy.

Mystery and Intrigue Surround Wittelsbach Blue Diamond Scheduled for Auction

Here is an interesting news item about the second largest diamond in the world that has been worn and owned by royalty and whose complete history remains locked in mystery and speculation. Called the Wittelsbach Blue Diamond after the House of Wittelsbach, a European royal family from Bavaria, the thirty-five point fifty-six carat diamond is second in size to the infamous Hope diamond displayed in the US Smithsonian Institution. Having been documented as owned by at least three royal dynasties, its history cannot be entirely chronicled as no one really knows where the diamond has been for years. Surprisingly, however, it has now shown up to be auctioned by Christie’s of London in December. And of course, the seller or owner of the blue diamond is anonymous, keeping the last eighty years of possession shrouded in mystery.

Expected to garner in the neighborhood of nine million pounds, Christie’s has issued a photograph of the Wittelsbach Blue Diamond being held by a white gloved hand. The price expected seems rather low compared with other recently auctioned diamonds with far less notoriety and given the fact that diamonds are a good investment in a poor economy. Regardless of the end price, the auction will surely receive plenty of attention.

Tiffany’s: Is there Anything More Classic?

There is something so classic and so … right when it comes to jewelry and Tiffany’s. Just like in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, there is no way that you can worry when you are in the store and if you are browsing the website on line, all of your thoughts simply disappear. Tiffany’s has been around forever and there is just something ever-so-classic and amazing about seeing that blue little box anywhere.

Recently, I saw the new movie Bride Wars and well, there was a Tiffany box involved and I just thought that if you are on the receiving end of getting something from Tiffany’s you are definitely one lucky person. If you are the one that is giving one of these special and beautiful jewelry pieces, then you are making someone so happy.

So here’s to you Tiffany’s! We love you and never change your classic blue box … it wouldn’t be the same!

All about Tanzanite

Tanzanite is one of those severely overlooked gemstones. I mean, I absolutely adore purple gems and I have never even consider tanzanite. But upon seeing something like this gorgeous brooch, it is impossible not to think about how visually stunning this gemstone really is.

Ruth Grieco is responsible for the stunning brooch. The use of tanzanite in the design is extremely meaningful.

Tanzanite was discovered in Tanzania, a state in East Africa, back in 1967. Then, a man from the Maasai tribe caught sight of a translucent blue glint in the foothills of towering Mount Kilimanjaro.

Even today, chiefs in the Maasai tribe will give their wives pieces of tanzanite when their wives given birth to a new baby. It creates a symbol of a healthy and happy life for the new child. It also acts as an heirloom.

David Yurman Diamond Earrings: They Are Beautiful!

Earrings are something that while we might not feature them a lot in this blog, they are certainly an important part of our outfit. Honestly, how many times have you picked out an outfit and have had to change it because of the earrings that you were wearing?

I know I have done it a whole lot, however, with David Yurman Diamond Earrings, I would think that you would not have to change your outfit, for these beauties go with anything!

The beautiful blue topaz in the middle is something that makes them so attractive to me because it is something different and something extremely unique – the diamonds around the topaz is something that I love too, so really … I am just in love with the earrings all together!

Wedding Jewelry - So Many Choices

So you are planning a traditional, yet modern wedding. The bride already looks stunning in her newly acquired dress, but there are still some final touches to be made. No wedding would be complete without an array of beautiful, charming jewelry on display for the reception to be dazzled by. When the time comes for the bride to walk down the aisle, one's eyes should flutter between the gracious beauty of the bride herself, and the amazing accessories chosen to emphasise the occasion and its glamorous significance. Knowing this, what it is that the professionals recommend for the upcoming bride to be wearing? We took a look at some expert opinion and advice, and will share it with you now.

Bridal jewellery comes in so many variations, iterations, and combinations, that it is often a challenge to get an entire look right, even at the best of times. Additionally, to add to the head and heart ache that can ensue, the colliding advice from industry "experts" can easily inundate you with a false sense of security about what it is you should be wearing "vs" what it is that you want to wear. After considering advice from numerous number of sources, I have pieced together my own analysis for you. This should be seen as just a few quick hints, nothing too major, and I am certainly not professing to be an absolute expert in bridal jewellery and co-ordination of accessories.

Probably the most important starting point is to consult someone who knows exactly what they are talking about. Someone who has plenty of experience in the industry, and who has had their advice actioned many times in the past. This does not include the attendants at bridal jewellery stores! Logically, all these attendants are employed to do is simply "sell sell sell". Of course they are going to tell you that you look incredible in that necklace, or those diamond studded earrings. And yes, they sound very convincing, because they force themselves into truly believing it. So, having ruled out this type of occurrence, perhaps a better approach is to choose a person who fits the criteria above, whilst at the same time being independent of any particular brand, style, or general predisposition towards bridal jewellery suppliers and products. Then, and only then, can you be sure that the advice you are getting is reliable, and personalized towards exactly what it is that suits you, and your existing style.

To give a piece of advice myself, I would recommend not overdoing it. A conservative outlook on the entire situation will reap generous rewards once the time to walk down the aisle comes. From a viewers perspective, there is nothing worse than thinking in ones mind: "oh dear, too much jewellery", or something along those lines. Unless your regular style is to go "all out", don't fall in to the trap of thinking that you must have everything from the white, pearl embedded gloves, through to the diamond studded earrings, tiara, necklace, and bracelet. The truth is, this is your day, and its completely up to you whether you want to dress like the queen, or just settle for that charming princess look. Just don't forget, both options are perfect, as long as they fit your style, and make you happy.

This is definitely a great way to add in some glamour and glitz to any outfit that you might be wearing!

Alice in Wonderland Jewelry — Fun & Festive!

If there is one thing that I love and that I have seen at least three times since it came out, that is Alice in Wonderland and the fact that jewelers are actually taking the hint and they are coming up with designs based on this awesome movie is incredible. This piece is just one of the many Alice in Wonderland inspired pieces that have come out since the movie has been released.

Roxanne earrings

These earrings are huge! And the name Roxanne is simply because it was all the time humming in my head while crafting this unique pair of silver earrings. I know for some people the name needs to have a deep meaning, even spiritual in nature, but for me, this was it. And I think it fits nicely. A cheerful Roxanne, dancing in the disco with her huge flashy earrings...

Large Swarovski gorgeous red crystals surrounding a herringbone weave dangling from the center of the sterling silver frame.

Wishing All My Pals A Belated But Happy New Year!!!

If you have been following my wee blog then you will have read that I'm struggling with confidence issues at the moment, so much so that I packed up all my beads and tools and got my husband to stash them away in the loft :o(

BUT, they have been brought back out and I have a couple of days off and am going to devote them to being creative. The support I have received in this moment of crisis from my digital friends has been amazing and so unexpected.

Jo from Gem Heaven is my angel, who is always propping me up, thank you Jo and I'm not going to let Miss Tight Knickers' jealously get the better of me ;o)

And, a flickr friend who pointed out that I haven't lost my creativity but that I'm hiding from it, kisses to you......how right you are!

There are a few bits of jewellery on my Flickr gallery to look at, it has taken me ages to get the courage to post them, it took me ages to get the courage to go back into Flickr at all, I know it sounds silly.

Creativity wasn't the only area for my lost confidence...... talking to people, going for a meal with my boys or friends, driving and getting petrol, I even welshed out on the company Christmas do this year.......all because of one persons throw away comment.

So, another New Years resolution is to be a little less sensitive and learn to stand up for myself a little better! Yeah right, I'm 46, bit late me thinks.........

Ruby History & Folklore

Ancient cultures revered the ruby gemstone. They believed in the rubies curative powers, especially in regards to problems of the heart and blood. Legend has it that Burmese warriors would embed a small piece of ruby under their skin before going into battle to protect and heal them. Medicine men in India also felt that the ruby had healing powers, particularly in the case of digestive disorders.
Thanks to all of the myth and folklore surrounding rubies as a talisman for strength and healing, rubies were highly sought after by royalty throughout the ages. They have had high trading value throughout the centuries as well, with literature discussing their worth along the trading route of the North Silk Road of China around 200 BC. Other literature of the Orient describes a ruby as “a drop of the heart’s blood of Mother Earth,” – a powerful metaphor.

Today, the ruby still has many connotations thanks to its unique fiery color. Many believe that the ruby brings its wearer power, romance, strength, health and amplified passion. Even for those who may not agree with a ruby’s mythical abilities, it is undeniable that the gemstone has a stronghold over jewelry lovers. It’s value, beauty and rarity make it a fabulous addition to a woman’s jewelry box, and a fantastic gift for a person with a July birthday.

However, today it is a known fact that there are many other methods and tests to ascertain the authenticity of a diamond. Many modern techniques help you to find out if the stone you wish to test is actually a clever imitation or the real thing. Big Diamonds Bring Big Dollars

While the tough economic times have affected the average diamond shopper, the extremely wealthy shoppers are on a buying spree. At Christie’s jewelry action October 21 in New York, it was as if the recession never happened.

An anonymous buyer purchased a 32.01-carat D color, Internally Flawless, type IIa Asscher cut diamond ring for $7.7, which was almost double the $3 million to $5 million pre-auction estimated value. At $240,000 per carat, the sale set a new world record for a colorless diamond.

The Annenberg Diamond’s previously owner was Leonore “Lee” Anneberg, who died in March at the age of 91. She was the US Chief of protocol in the Reagan administration and was the wife of billionaire publisher Walter Annenberg, who died in 2002.

A 16.33-carat round diamond with E color and Flawless clarity was purchased for $1.6 million ($97,000 per carat) by a private Asian dealer. Other items that sold for more than preliminary estimates included belle époque diamond and rock crystal bow brooch by Cartier (sold for $1.1 million, estimate $200,000 to $300,000) and a Harry Winston emerald and diamond necklace (sold for $950,500, estimate $500,000 to $700,000).

Other big dollar items sold at the auction included a pair of pear pendants with a 7.18-carat Fancy-Blue pear-shaped diamond and an 8.04-carat Fancy Light Pink colored pear-shaped diamond, which sold for $1,426,500. A pair of earrings featuring D color, Internally Flawless pear-shaped diamonds (7.51 carats and 8.18 carats) sold for $1,202,500.

The Christie's auction (October 21 in New York) totaled $46.5 million.

Magnificent Colored Diamond Sale

Sotheby’s “Magnificent Jewels” sale in Geneva November 17 was a high dollar success for colored diamonds and other colored gemstones but the highlight of the show was a green diamond ring.
Only a few natural green diamonds have been auctioned in recent decades and most of those had bluish or yellowish secondary color, which pointed to the importance of the sale of a 2.52-carat Fancy Vivid green color Cushion Modified Brilliant Cut diamond. The rare diamond was claw-set in a platinum mounting with yellow gold head.

The cushion modified brilliant cut diamond was graded Fancy Vivid Green color, VS1 clarity, depth 63.9%, table 58%, measurements 8.80 x 7.35 x 4.70 mm, ratio 1.20, Excellent polish, Very Good symmetry, Faint fluorescence, and was laser inscribed “GIA 2106213537.” While not the highest priced item at the auction, the $3.08 million sale set a world-record for price per carat for a green diamond at auction.

Other colored diamonds sales made history too. A 3.17-carat Fancy Intense blue diamond sold for $2.52 million and set a new world-record for price per carat for an Intense Blue diamond at auction. The round brilliant cut diamond was set in a simple four-prong platinum mounting. The natural Fancy Intense blue colored diamond has VVS2 clarity.

The Roxburghe Rubies, a necklace and earring set, sold for $5.77 million, five times the estimated price before the auction. The necklace contains 24 cushion shaped rubies and 24 cushion-cut diamonds and the set dates back to the late 19th century. The necklace was the property of Mary, Duchess of Roxburghe and is thought to have been purchased from Garrards by the 5th Earl of Rosebery, as recorded in one of his diary entries. The necklace is accompanied by its original turquoise velvet fitted case, embellished with the monogram R under a coronet, by R&S Garrard & Co, Goldsmith and Jewellers to The Crown, as well as by the original hand-written documentation detailing the weights of the stones
